The Lancaster is a four-engine Second World War heavy bomber designed and built by Roy Chadwick at Avro for the Royal Air Force (RAF). It first saw active service in 1942 and became the main heavy bomber used by the RAF overshadowing its close contemporaries the Handley Page Halifax and Short Sterling. The "Lanc" could take the largest bombs used by the RAF such as the 22,000 lb (10,000 kg) Grand Slam earthquake bombs. Its versatility made it the natural choice to carry the Barnes-Wallis bomb.
