The Shackleton was developed by Avro as a long-range maritime patrol aircraft for use by the Royal Air Force (RAF). Named after polar explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton it is a development of the famous wartime Avro Lancaster bomber. Entering service with the RAF in 1951, primarily in the anti-submarine warfare and maritime patrol aircraft roles; it also had other roles including airborne early warning which it would continue to do until its retirement in 1991.
