The Wellington was a long range medium bomber designed in the mid-1930s by Rex Pierson, Vickers-Armstrong's' Chief Designer. The Wellingtons of Squadron No.9 and No.149 took part in the first bombing raid of World War II on September 4th,1939. Designed as a day bomber, it was widely used as a night bomber in the early years of the Second World War and after being largely replaced by heavy bombers, the Wellington continued to serve throughout the war, particularly as an anti-submarine aircraft.
